On behalf of a broken industry, I’m sorry.

I get a lot of recruiter outreaches and while I should be flattered I find myself frustrated at best.  They tell me how they were drawn to my background and how they have the perfect role for me.   The "perfect role" in question often makes no sense given my background.  I would understand if they were close, adjacent even.  I'd give them credit if they were just being creative but these make no sense.  I get the numbers game aspect of this business but these are shots in the dark, while blindfolded, facing the wrong way.

A common complaint I hear about the recruiting industry is that candidates feel like they are just a number.  Some recruiter reached out to them and had an interview just to hit a quota.  No depth, little understanding of what they do, and no follow-up. Same from the hiring manager side.  If any candidates were sent they often don't make sense or no explanation was given as to why they are being presented.  Inevitably leading to the question, whether it is asked or not, did you even listen to me?

The reason I started this company was to honor what I learned over 20+ years and that is to listen, give before you get, and if you can't deliver, tell them so.

If you think there has to be something better, there is.  Don't accept mediocrity.  While there is plenty of bad out there, there are some that are very good.  If you find the ones that get it hang on to them.  Work to keep the relationship alive and bilateral.  A wise person once told me you need a few good people in your life:  A good doctor, a good lawyer, a good accountant, and a good headhunter.  All of these professions are meant to keep you alive, out of jail, and employed.  The truly good ones make your life better.  Life isn't about surviving, it is about thriving.  Surround yourself with those that have that same goal for you.
